Over
the next few days we did the “tourist thing”. One worth mentioning was the zoo,
it comprised of a large variety of animals kept in far less than humane
conditions. I was, however the main attraction. Instead of taking pictures of
the animals, the locals took every opportunity to get a snap of me. While
dodging rats and cameras we were able to take a close look at the animals. They
were kept in undersized holding cells with very little or nothing to keep them
entertained. It is very depressing to see the majesty of a tiger torn away from
him as he walks in a trancelike state, from end to end of his prison cell,
breathing heavily and suffering from malnutrition - Or an Elephant thrashing
back and forth until exhaustion to try and break the 2m long chain that
shackles it to the floor. Not a pretty sight.
