Time went by speedily and soon we became hungry again. After
a tip off we headed to a local seafood restaurant. We walked kilometre upon
kilometre only to find that we were headed in the wrong direction. Our
desperate need to use a restroom took us to a restaurant that would change the
course of our evening. After a brilliant seafood platter and a few too many
cocktails we were getting ready to leave. This was when we met “the marines”. A
westerner at the table next to us leant back in his chair and uttered a single
word that would lead us into a night of debauchery and sin... “English?” I of
course nodded and was invited to their table. My girlfriend returned from the
bathroom to find me with my new group of friends. We were more than happy to
speak English to people other than ourselves. We exchanged stories and laughter
and got more and more out of hand as the night continued. Every now and then
someone would yell “tram phan tram” meaning something along the lines of “100%”
and we would have to quickly finish our drinks. After countless jugs of beer
(paid for by the marines) they began to break their “top secret pledge of
silence” and divulged that they were here on military business and left it at
that. So with a backpack full of stolen glasses we headed to the bar district.
I can’t remember too much after this point but my girlfriend assures me that it
was anything but civil. This brings a close to my first proper night in Vietnam.
